Specialty Bores

If all bores were cased, short, straight, and shallow, we would be in the auger boring business. Thankfully, the high-tech tools of directional drilling allow us to meet the needs of our clients who need uncased, long, curved, or deep bores to get the job done. The following are examples of how directional boring can be applied to your unique situation:

A 70,000 pound rig pulls back 400 feet of 18” casing on a vertically curved interstate bore.
With conventional boring, casing is usually required to help steer the bore. The problem with this is that if rock or unsuitable material is encountered during the bore, the casing is already in the ground. With directional boring, we drill a pilot shot BEFORE pulling back any casing or pipe, therefore any unforeseen soil (rock) conditions are encountered prior to putting the product in the hole. Most importantly, WE DO NOT NEED CASING TO STEER THE BORE. This saves the cost of the casing as well as the added expense for upsizing the hole an additional 8”.

LONG BORES
Length is typically a non-factor in directional boring. With conventional boring, bores over 200’ long are considered lengthy, especially if they are on grade. With directional boring, we install bores over 600’ long and on grade on a regular basis. Our cost on long bores are very competitive with auger boring and are definitely the way to go compared to a tunnel.

CURVED BORES
Horizontally curved bores are ideal for navigating around existing structures, easements, and bodies of water. Our price per foot is typical the same as a straight bore. The radius of our bore is only limited to the bend radius of the product.

Vertically curved bores are perfect for eliminating a situation that would require a deep entry and exit pit. Recessed highways, utility, lake, river, and creek crossings are excellent examples of how a vertically curved bore can get your product past a deep obstacle without requiring a deep cut. As with horizontal bores, our price per foot is typical the same as a straight bore and the radius of our bore is only limited to the bend radius of the product.
